It is now cultivated in many temperate climates having been imported to the West in 16th century. Basil is a fly deterrent and grows well in pots in the kitchen. Used extensively in cooking, especially with pasta, sauces, pesto, tomatoes, salads and soups. Basil is high in volatile oils which help with cramps, nausea, poor digestion and insomnia.
