A hardy evergreen perennial that is native to southern and central Europe where it is found growing wild in rocky walls and dry sunny waste lands. The stems are woody at the base and the rosy pink flowers grow in small whorls between the leaves. Although it is rarely used in medicine it has been used to treat digestive disorders and in alcoholic drinks.
