Also with old names such as Foals foot and Horse foot, Coltsfoot is a short growing creeping perennial with round/heart shaped characteristic hairy leaves and yellow dandelion type flowers. It is a soothing expectorant and anti-spasmodic that has been used for centuries to treat irritating coughs, bronchitis, spasms, and other respiratory problems in a variety of ways – through smoking the dried leaves, as a tea, made into a syrup or tincture or pounded with honey. The leaves also have an anti-inflammatory action and were applied to boils and abscesses. In Culpeper’s Complete Herbal coltsfoot was recommended for St Anthony ’s fire which was the English term for Erysipelas – a bacterial infection that caused large red raised patches on the skin. It is not recommended for internal use unless by somebody qualified because f the high levels of hepatotoxic which can damage the liver.
