A self seeding hardy annual or bi - biennial with umbels of white flowers. The seeds have been found at Stone Age sites and Egyptian tombs. The leaves have a mild aniseed flavour that can be used in salads and soups but it is the pungent seeds that are more often used to flavour bread, cakes, liqueurs and cabbage dishes. The seeds eaten at the end of a meal sweeten the breath, aid digestion and expel wind. The seeds have been used to encourage fidelity in a lover and used in sachets as a talisman to attract a mate.
