Also known as rats and mice due to its smell hounds tongue is a hardy biennial with ruby coloured flowers and can be found growing wild in waste places and grassland. Like comfrey it contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that may be carcinogenic. It can be used externally for bites and minor injuries as it speeds healing and soothes inflamed tissues. It is subject to legal restrictions in some countries.
