A native to North America, it is also known as Joe Pye weed and queen of the meadow. It is a tall growing hardy perennial with clusters of pink flowers. The roots are the most important part of the plant and help with bladder stones and urinary problems hence the name gravelroot. A tea made from the fresh leaves is used to bring down fevers - it is reputedly named after a Native American, Joe Pye who used it for this purpose. The seeds yields a red dye.
