Description

  • Edible leaves and flowers
  • Rich in iron
  • Easy to maintain
  • Long lasting

Although found growing wild, chives didn’t begin to be cultivated until the Middle Ages; many people believed that the stronger tasting herbs had a greater healing power and also improved physical strength. The wild variety can still be found and harvested, but a thick clump growing in the garden or pot, ready to cut is much easier to use.

Plant Care

  • Height: 30-60cm
  • Type: Hardy
  • Aspect: Sun/shade
  • Soil: Any/alkaline
  • Flower colour: Purple
  • Flowering period: April - May

A really easy herb to grow, chives is happy in most soils and with a mixture of shade and sun. It is a great one for containers too, from window boxes to strawberry pots and will continue to spread each year to produce a sizeable clump - perfect for the kitchen. Keep harvesting the leaves throughout the year, the flowers when they arrive will slow leaf production but can be eaten too - just cut them off if you would prefer more leaves.
