There are many folklore tales associated with this herb - it seems in many countries it was worn to bring good health, during midsummer a sprig worn all day was cast into a fire and as it burned, it is believed all the ills of the year went with it.

A tall easy to grow spreading perennial – this herb can develop in to a well-established clump and looks very attractive with its variegated green and white leaves. The grey leaves of wild mugwort can be commonly found growing on field margins and in rough uncultivated ground. The long stems can be cut right down at the end of the summer – it grows well in a pot if space is at a premium, but need to be divided every two to three years to stop it becomes to root bound.

Usage

Regarded in the past as a magical herb, mugwort was one of nine herbs used to repel spirits and demons. It is a bitter herb, used to aid the female reproductive system and stimulate appetite.
In Chinese medicine, ground mugwort leaves are burned in a cone near the body’s acupuncture point to increase energy flow in a process known as moxibustion.
Mugwort is thought to have got its name from the Saxon muggia wort because of its ability to deter flies and midges.
