Naturally gotu kola likes a position with a decent amount of shade and plenty of water. It is a spreading creeping herb and tender in the UK so will need warmth in the winter, it won't survive outside in a cold greenhouse, but does well on a light windowsill inside. Once all the frosts have one it can be moved outside and will grow quickly during the warmer months and shouldn't be allowed to dry out. If you end up with a large plant at the end of the summer, a smaller part can be split off and planted up to bring inside to carry on over winter.
A traditional Ayurvedic herb it is traditionally renowned for improving the intellect, relaxing the nervous system and a specific herb for healing wounds and scars. It makes a cooling addition to salads that accompany rich, spicy curries. The fresh leaf is picked and infused in cold water as a hot infusion can destroy its medicinal properties. The cooling leaves are also juiced and added to summer drinks.
