A sturdy herb with hollow stems and the flavour similar to parsley and celery with a hint of something else, it is native to the Mediterranean and was valued by the Romans and Greeks for its medicinal and culinary properties. It is a great herb for experimenting with in the kitchen; include it in soups, with eggs, stuffing’s and salads, or follow a classic Romanian recipe – a country that uses this versatile herb extensively.

An easy perennial to grow, lovage can be a bit of thug in the garden - it doesn't spread so much as just grow huge getting bigger and taller each year, with this in mind give it enough space. It is happy in sun or shade and a soil that isn't too light and can be grown successfully in containers - make sure it is fed regularly to keep in lush and green.
