This very attractive perennial grows into a sizeable bush over the course of three or four years. It loves the sun but is happy in most soils and grows well in containers. In mild winters the leaves often stay on the stems, but often most of them fall off - either way it is best cut back hard in late February or March, the new growth will all grow from the lower stems and keep it more compact and bushier.
Usage
The flowers are edible and can be added to drinks and salads, the leaves tend to be a bit bitter. These salvias are often grown for their foliage alone.
