This simple homemade thyme syrup is a natural remedy that's been used for generations to soothe sore throats and ease cold symptoms. Easy to make with just three ingredients. Store it in the fridge for up to two months and reach for it whenever you feel a cold coming on.
Ingredients
- 150ml water
- 1 large bunch fresh thyme (about 20-25g)
- 100ml honey (preferably raw or local)
Method
- Boil the water in a small saucepan.
- Add the thyme (whole sprigs are fine - no need to strip the leaves).
- Turn off the heat immediately and cover the pan and leave to completely cool
- Strain the liquid through a fine sieve. Discard the thyme.
- Whisk in the honey until fully dissolved
- Pour into a clean bottle (a sterilized glass bottle or jar works best).
- Store in the fridge for up to 2 months. Label with the date.
This can be taken on its own by the teaspoon or added to other teas for the common cold such as peppermint and elderflower.
Growing Your Own Thyme for Remedies
The best way to ensure you always have fresh thyme on hand is to grow your own. Thyme is easy to grow in pots on a sunny windowsill or in the garden.
For medicinal use, we recommend:
- Common Thyme - Traditional medicinal variety
